Weathered Light
A rugged, silver-haired man turns into dramatic light, every line of his face a record of the years.
“Weathered Light” is a bravura black-and-white portrait of a man who has clearly lived. Tousled hair catches a hard raking light, deep lines map the brow and cheeks, and the eyes — narrowed, appraising — hold the viewer with easy authority.
Kevin Van Pelt works the full range of grey here, from the near-white highlights along the hair and collar to the velvet blacks of the jacket, sculpting the head out of a stormy, atmospheric ground. The denim and leather are suggested with loose, decisive strokes that never fuss over detail.
The effect is cinematic and a little heroic — a portrait of experience itself, rendered with the confidence of an artist who knows exactly how much to leave to shadow.
