The Prayer

A profile caught in the hush of contemplation, where a weathered face turns inward and the beard dissolves into silver light.

“The Prayer” is a portrait of stillness. Seen in profile, eyes closed, an older man bows into a moment of private devotion, and Kevin Van Pelt lets the whole canvas fall quiet around him. The pale dome of the brow gathers the light; everything else recedes into a soft, forgiving dark.

The real marvel is the beard — rendered in countless strokes of silver, pewter and bone, each hair a small decision, until the whole mass seems to move like weather. Against the warm flesh and the black ground, it becomes a landscape of its own, textured and alive.

There is no drama here, only presence. Kevin has always been drawn to the inner life of his subjects, and in this serene, inward-facing piece he finds it whole: a man alone with his thoughts, lit as if from within.
