The Upward Gaze
Long hair swept back, collar open, a young man lifts his face to an unseen light in a near-monochrome study of longing.
“The Upward Gaze” is a study in aspiration. A young man, long dark hair falling back from his face, lifts his chin toward a light we cannot see, and Kevin Van Pelt renders the moment almost entirely in silvered greys and blacks, letting a single pale throat and open collar carry the warmth.
The brushwork is loose and confident — the jacket dissolving into shadow, the hair a soft dark mass — so that everything funnels toward the tilted face and its expression of searching, hopeful resolve.
Stripped of color, the painting becomes pure feeling: the posture of someone reaching for something just beyond the frame. It is a quietly cinematic piece, and a reminder of how much Kevin can say with the narrowest of palettes.
