Repose in Charcoal
A seated figure study rendered in velvety charcoal, light carving the body from a bare studio corner.
“Repose in Charcoal” returns Kevin Van Pelt to the fundamentals — the figure, the light, and a stick of charcoal. A young man sits folded into himself in the corner of a studio, knees drawn up, hands loosely clasped, and the drawing lives entirely in the interplay of shadow and reflected light across his form.
Kevin models the body with smudged, confident darks and sudden passages of saved white paper, letting the floor and walls fall away into soft grey. The curly dark hair and shadowed eyes give the figure a brooding, classical weight.
There is nothing to hide behind in a charcoal study, and that is the point. This is drawing as discipline and as pleasure — the artist’s eye and hand working in plain sight.
