Emerging from Shadow
A torso surfaces from darkness, head bowed, the body half-dissolved into a field of deep charcoal.
In “Emerging from Shadow,” a figure rises out of near-total darkness — a bowed head, a pale shoulder, the soft architecture of a torso — before sinking back into the black. Kevin Van Pelt uses charcoal here almost as sculpture, carving light where he wants the eye to land and surrendering the rest to shadow.
The hair falls forward to hide the face, so that the drawing becomes about the body and its vulnerability rather than identity. Smoky passages of grey pool at the base of the sheet like a reflection on wet ground.
It is a moody, atmospheric study — intimate and a little mysterious — and a fine example of how much Kevin can summon from the simplest of means.
