The Hunter's Rest

Camouflage, a ball cap and a quiet cabin window — a mountain man at ease in a rare moment of daylight stillness.

“The Hunter’s Rest” belongs to the world of Kevin Van Pelt’s “Men of the Mountain” — that enduring fascination with lives lived close to the land. A bearded man in a camouflage hoodie settles back into a wooden chair, boots planted, a window of bare spring trees glowing behind him.

Kevin takes evident pleasure in the textures of this life: the mottled pattern of the camo, the worn denim, the warm tile floor, the raking light that stripes the log wall. Nothing is hurried; the whole painting breathes with the slow rhythm of a day off.

It is a portrait of contentment — of a man entirely at home in his place and his skin — and it extends Kevin’s ongoing, affectionate record of the people of the Blue Ridge.
