Into the Vortex
“Into the Vortex” sets a cool, composed figure against a background that will not hold still. Concentric rings of scarlet, rust and bruised violet spin outward from a single smoldering sun, and at their center a man in black stands perfectly, almost defiantly, calm.
Kevin Van Pelt builds the tension entirely from that contrast — the restrained, sculptural modeling of the face and suit set against the loose, feverish energy of the swirling ground. The eyes meet ours flatly, unbothered, as though the chaos behind him were someone else’s weather.
It is a psychological portrait as much as a physical one: a study of the stillness a person can summon at the eye of the storm. Expressive, modern and a little unnerving, it shows a painter unafraid to let color carry emotion to its edge.
